Yes. Travelling east from Vancouver, guests usually see several hours of mountain scenery in daylight, particularly from spring through early autumn. The train reaches Jasper late the following morning, so views around Valemount, Mount Robson and Jasper National Park occur during the day. Winter daylight is shorter, and delays can affect exact timings, but the eastbound journey still provides a rewarding introduction to the Canadian Rockies.
Our local travel experts are happy to advise which direction suits you best, depending on the landscapes you most want to see and the time of year you are travelling. There is no single right answer, and a short conversation usually makes the choice straightforward.

Spend time off the train in Jasper
I recommend breaking up the journey with a few days in Jasper. It gives you time to stretch your legs, explore the lakes and mountains of Jasper National Park, and enjoy more of the Rockies before continuing to Toronto.

The scheduled journey from Vancouver to Toronto is four nights and roughly four days, covering about 4,466 kilometres (2,775 miles). Most guests find the pace deeply relaxing: there is always something new to look at, and the slow rhythm of the train makes the distance feel like a pleasure rather than a commute.
On VIA Rail, passenger trains sometimes yield to freight traffic, which means the journey can occasionally run a little longer than the scheduled four nights. This is a normal part of long-distance rail travel in Canada and rarely affects plans significantly.
Our local travel experts build each itinerary with comfortable time at either end of the journey, so guests are never rushed at arrival and there is always room to breathe should the train run a little late.
The Canadian makes a number of scheduled stops between Vancouver and Toronto where guests can board, disembark or break their journey for an overnight stay. The most popular of these are Jasper and Winnipeg.

Jasper sits in the heart of Jasper National Park, in the Canadian Rockies, and is the natural place to pause for a night or two if you want to explore the mountains before continuing east. Our local travel experts can arrange hotels and excursions in Jasper so the stop becomes a highlight of the trip rather than simply a layover. Full detail is on the Train to Jasper page.

Winnipeg marks the halfway point of the crossing and is a lively city with a strong arts and food scene. Breaking here for a night gives guests a chance to rest, explore and then reboard refreshed for the second half of the journey into Ontario.
